Why Exercise Is An Essential Ingredient For The Prevention And Management Of Diabetes and Other Chronic Illnesses

A unique strength training program developed by researchers at the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, this Australian Government funded initiative will make exercise more accessible to the wider community. The program has been specifically designed for people with type 2 diabetes, or those at risk of developing it. It is also ideal for those people with, or at risk of a chronic disease such as heart disease, osteoporosis and cancer.

One of the misconceptions in the wider community is that exercise should cease when diagnosed with an illness or chronic disease. While it is true that an exercise program may have to be modified during times of sickness, it is imperative that a quality, individualised lifestyle and exercise regime is implemented to help support the body and avoid further complications.

Lack of exercise can exacerbate feelings of anxiety and depression and can lead to more serious conditions such as bone density loss and sarcopenia (muscle loss) due to minimal movement. Ironically, it is physical activity such as strength training that will help to combat all of the above conditions while aiding recovery.

As Nick Jack from No Regrets Personal Training explains, he and his team noticed a gap in the system for those who are suffering from debilitating chronic conditions.

“In today’s modern society, there is an emphasis on ‘go hard or go home training’. This type of training can be dangerous for those with a high level of fitness, let alone someone who is managing a chronic condition. We saw a gap in the market for those who are undergoing treatment for conditions such as cancer, heart disease and osteoporosis. After treatment and initial rehabilitation, there is a lack of support and guidance in terms of quality exercise and lifestyle choices for patients as they re-enter everyday life. These people are falling through the cracks when they are in desperate need of assistance. We are here to change that,” said Nick.

With an exercise and lifestyle focus, the program places emphasis on a multiple angle approach to give the body every chance to heal itself. This holistic view recognises that the body is made up of a system of systems including musculoskeletal, hormonal, visceral and limbic. In order to re-build these systems, it is vital that patients address four key issues or ‘bricks’:

–    Exercise – more specifically strength training
–    Nutrition – elimination of sugar is essential
–    Stress – can sabotage the entire program if neglected
–    Sleep – recovery paramount to the healing process

Often overlooked in favor of allopathic treatments such as surgery and medication, these ‘bricks’ are vital in order to maintain an optimal level of health.     

Another challenge for those living with a chronic illness is having to relearn skills related to balance, agility and co-ordination. Unfortunately, many people within the medical field are oblivious to the importance of the single most effective component to prevent disease and recovery – exercise.

The power of exercise, in particular strength training, is becoming more evident when it comes to managing and preventing chronic illnesses. People with stronger muscles from regular weight training are up to 40% less likely to die from cancer, according to new research. A team of experts tracked the lifestyles of over 8,500 men for more than two decades. Each volunteer had regular medical checkups that included tests of their muscular strength. The men who regularly worked out with weights and had the highest muscle strength were between 30-40% less likely to lose their life to a deadly tumour.
