If you own a national golf membership, you will want to take advantage of the golf courses around the country. There are thousands of courses to choose from, so it is best to know what the top five golf courses are rated as the best in the country. You will not want to miss these courses.
Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta National Golf Course is located in Augusta, Georgia and Alister MacKenzie and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. designed it. It is a private golf course and it is where the Masters is played. It was built in 1931and the first Masters was held in 1934. Some of the notable features of the course include the Big Oak Tree that was planted in the 1850s, Ike’s Pond, and Rae’s Creek.
Pine Valley Golf Club
Pine Valley Golf Club is located in Clementon, New Jersey. George Crump and HS Colt designed this private golf course. In 2012, the course was ranked as the best in the United States and World. It was founded back in 1913 and the Walker Cup Tournament is played here. It is also home to the Crump Cup for amateurs.
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club
Shinnecock Hills Golf Club is located in Southampton, New York. This beautiful golf course was built in 1891 and started out with only 12 holes, but four years later, it was expanded to 18 holes. Proper golfing attire is required for all members and guests. This means that t-shirts, jeans, and regular shorts are not allowed. It is also one of the few golf courses that ban cell phones.
Oakmont Country Club
Oakmont Country Club is located in Oakmont, Pennsylvania. It was built and designed by Henry Clay Fownes, William Fownes, and Tom Fazio. This club has a very rich history, as founders fought with different additions should be considered for the course. The biggest change was in early 1950 when a pool was finally added and saved the life of the course. With the rich history comes many customs that are still required to this day. Even if you have a national golf membership, you should check with the guesthouse for rules and regulations.
Cypress Point Club
Cypress Point Club is located in Pebble Beach, California and was built by Alister MacKenzie. This course is ranked fifth in the United States by Golf Magazine and ranked number 2 in the world. It is well known for three of the 18 holes that are have a boundary of the Pacific Ocean. In fact, one of those three holes is what gives this club a place on world golf courses. Hole number 16 requires a golfer to hit the ball over the Pacific Ocean to a small island made of bunkers.
