Carolyn Royer Spencer was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia where she still resides. She received her Bachelor of Science degrees from Old Dominion University in Early Childhood Education/ Elementary Education as well as in Visual Arts (K-12). Carolyn was especially influenced in art by one of her instructors- Charles Sibley. Carolyn taught kindergarten, Title 1 kindergarten, first, and second grades in Norfolk and Virginia Beach and received the honor of being designated “Career Teacher”. She inspired her students to be creative by incorporating art into her lessons.
Since retiring from a teaching career in Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Carolyn still works part-time in the Virginia Beach School System. She is a member of the Cape Charles Historic Society, assisting as a Board member on educational issues. She is an active member of the Ladies’ Oriental Shrine of North America and sends her children’s books to the Shriner Hospital. Carolyn is also a member of Bristol Who’s Who and International Society of Business Leaders. Among other activities, she enjoys reading, writing, travel, golf, and singing.
In order to help children deal with the out-of-control bullying issues, Carolyn co-authored and illustrated a children’s anti-bullying series. She spent countless hours creating innovative characters, such as robotic computers and animals that children love and can relate to personally. All three of these books are a great resource for guidance counselors, teachers, parents, grandparents, and anyone who deals with children. Carolyn does readings at local schools, hosts anti-bullying assemblies, and speaks on radio interviews. An article on how her books help to curb the bullying epidemic appeared in “Close-Up Newsletter”(Nov. 2013), in the Dec.7, 2013 issue of the “Virginian Pilot” newspaper and in the International Reading Association’s Nov./Dec. issue of “Reading Today” magazine. Carolyn is being honored as a featured author/illustrator in Women of Distinction’s “Ten Best Women Authors Magazine”.
Book One, “Senor Smarty Pantaloons and the Mystery of the Missing Teachers”, is a clever, colorful tale which involves happenings at Foxaloon Elementary School where Foxanna Powerpaws is the principal. This unique story shows children how terrible bullying is but presents it in a different perspective by having adults bully each other. Book Two, “Lord Computesalot’s Quintessential Quest to Banish Bullies”, is a creative, fun activity book which uses poetry, puzzles, games, and songs to teach children about bullying. Book Three, “Lord Computesalot, Ruler of Aurora Bullyalis, and His Secret Quest to End Bullying”, was created to help those who have been or will be bullied. Bullying can affect all ages and is detrimental to self-esteem and self-worth.
